New Students
With more than 40 faculty and staff veterans at Oakland University, Oakland University understands and supports the unique needs of the student veteran. Oakland University is consistently rated as a Gold-Level Veteran Friendly School by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.
Oakland University offers an intimate, culturally rich campus with 140 bachelor’s degree and 137 graduate degree and certificate programs. Small class sizes mean you receive personal attention from dedicated, expert faculty.

It is highly recommended to request certification before the following dates in order to ensure timely processing between OU and the VA. Please keep in mind that we are here to assist you throughout the process but you must also take ownership of your benefits.
- Fall Semester: August 10
- Winter Semester: December 10
- Summer Semester: April 10
You will initially be certified by the number of classes you are taking. At the end of the add/drop period, we again certify you with the tuition amount based on your schedule.
- For Chapter 30, 1606, 1607 and 35, tuition will be paid directly to you.
- For Chapter 31 and 33, tuition is paid to OU. Please keep in mind if your Chapter 33 benefits are less than 100% you are responsible for the remaining balance. It is encouraged that you consider all your options, such as a payment plan, FAFSA and OU grants and scholarships.
Remember, you are required to notify Veteran Certification every time you add or drop a class. Failure to do so may result in adjustment to your certification that you may not realize. If you have questions, please let us know and we can discuss this with you before you adjust your schedule.
Oakland University is a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approved school that accepts transfer credits including College Level Examination Program credits (CLEP), and military education courses based on American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations.
If transferring from another institution or changing your major, you must notify the VA by filling out the Change of Program form, 22-1995 (22-5495 for Chapter 35 recipients). This form can be picked up at the Office of the Registrar or the application can be completed online. Submit this form to the school to which you are transferring your benefits or to the Office of the Registrar.

OU also accepts transfer coursework completed in the U.S. Armed Forces and U.S. Armed Forces Institute with the following conditions:
- Course content must be comparable to those for which OU typically grants transfer credit.
- The American Council on Education (ACE) must recommend credit grants for particular courses.
- Credits must be acceptable to the appropriate academic department at OU.
- Request Joint Services Transcripts (formerly AARTS and SMART transcripts) from http://jst.doded.mil.
Veterans at Oakland University receive many benefits including:
- priority registration.
- four free electives for undergraduate Veteran students; review of American Council on Education credit for military courses
- in-state tuition rates to any veteran or dependent, using VA educational benefits, regardless of residence.
- no late payment penalties for Chapter 33 recipients when VA tuition payments are received after a bill due date.
- no penalties in case of deployments or federal orders requiring service members to relocate outside of their geographical area.
- access to Student Veterans of Oakland University, a recognized student organization that brings together veterans for social and volunteer activities
Eligibility: Must have a six-year contract with the Guard or Reserves and have completed your basic training. Note: You must currently be in the Guard or Reserves to receive your education benefits.
To apply for Chapter 1606 benefits, students need to fill out an Application for VA Educational Benefits, 22-1990.
If transferring from another institution or changing your major, you must notify the VA by filling out the Change of Program form, 22-1995 (22-5495 for Chapter 35 recipients). This form can be picked up at the Office of the Registrar or the application can be completed online. Submit this form to the school to which you are transferring your benefits (changing schools) or to the Office of the Registrar.
Also, a copy of the veteran’s Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE), a Request for VA Enrollment Certification Form, and an OUVA Student Record Form as well as a signed plan of study needs to be provided to the VA certifying official in the Office of the Registrar.
NOTE: Students returning to Oakland University and continuing to utilize benefits should complete a Request for VA Enrollment Certification Form, provided all other information is on file.

You also can visit the WAVE application website to sign up for direct deposit using the direct deposit form.
Eligibility will be determined by the Department of Defense or Department of Homeland Security as appropriate. Generally, a member of a reserve component who serves on active duty on or after September 11, 2001, under title 10, U.S.C., for at least 90 consecutive days under a contingency operation is eligible. National Guard members also are eligible if their active duty is under section 502(f), title 32 U.S.C. and they serve for 90 consecutive days when authorized by the president or secretary of defense for a national emergency and is supported by federal funds. Note: You must currently be in the Guards or Reserves to receive your education benefits.
To apply for Chapter 1607 benefits, the student needs to fill out an Application for VA Educational Benefits, 22-1990 or if changing schools or benefits, 22-1995 form and print “Chapter 1607” on the top of the VA form.

Eligibility: To be eligible for Dependent Benefits you must be the child or spouse of a veteran who is either deceased or 100% disabled due to military related injuries.
To apply, students need to fill out an Application for Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Form 22-5490.
If transferring from another institution or changing your major, you must notify the VA by filling out the Change of Program form, 22-1995 (22-5495 for Chapter 35 recipients). This form can be picked up at the Office of the Registrar or the application can be completed online. Submit this form to the school to which you are transferring your benefits (changing schools) or to the Office of the Registrar.
Also, a copy of the Letter of Eligibility issued by the VA, a Request for VA Enrollment Certification Form, and an OUVA Student Record Form as well as a signed plan of work needs to be provided to the VA certifying official in the Office of the Registrar. In addition, dependents and survivors need to know their VA claim number prior to applying.

Meet with Your Faculty Adviser
Each degree student is assigned a faculty adviser upon admission to a graduate program. Faculty advisers help students develop a plan of study and select graduate courses that adhere to program curriculum, and discuss career options and alternatives after graduation. OU's Graham Health Center provides convenient, affordable, high-quality health care right on campus. Complete health care services are provided, including physical exams; and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses and minor injuries. Over-thecounter medication and supplies can be purchased without an appointment. Most insurance is accepted (except Tricare). Student health insurance is available.

Talking to a therapist or counselor may help ease the transition to civilian life and college. All university students are entitled to six free counseling sessions at Oakland's Counseling Center (subsequent sessions are $12 each). Medication may also be helpful in alleviating some trauma symptoms.
